The 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival came alive on Monday at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island, as residents and visitors witnessed a vibrant display of culture, music, and heritage.

The event, organised by the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, attracted a large audience, including residents, diplomats, and tourists, reaffirming Lagos’ status as a cultural hub.

Top government officials in attendance included Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; his wife, Dr Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; Deputy Governor Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat; Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Solomon Bonu; Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka; Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila; and Head of Service, Mr Olabode Agoro.

The carnival featured live performances from artistes such as 9ice, Terry Apala, Teni, Niniola, and Reminisce, adding contemporary entertainment to the cultural celebration.

Rooted in Afro-Brazilian history, the Fanti Carnival reflects the legacy of formerly enslaved Africans who returned from Brazil and settled in Lagos, bringing with them a blend of music, dance, and performance traditions.

This year’s edition combined traditional elements with modern creativity, highlighting efforts by the state government to preserve cultural heritage while promoting tourism and the creative industry.

The procession included various communities such as Okepopo, Okoo-Faji, Epetedo, Isale-Eko, Lafiaji, Olowogbowo, and the Brazilian Campos Carretta group, each showcasing distinct cultural identities through colourful costumes and performances.
