Police alert Oyo residents over ‘Black Axe’ cult founders’ day

The Oyo State Police Command has issued a security alert to residents over potential threats linked to the July 7 Founders’ Day celebration of the Neo-Black Movement of Africa, also known as the Black Axe or Aiye Confraternity. The cult group’s annual event has raised serious concerns over possible violence and clashes with rival groups.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Adewale Osifeso, intelligence reports indicate a heightened risk of large-scale retribution and public disorder. He warned that rival cult groups might exploit the occasion to settle scores, potentially leading to mayhem in various parts of the state.

“Our intelligence suggests that the Neo-Black Movement of Africa may use this occasion to execute plans that could lead to serious public disorder, including reprisals against rival cult groups,” Osifeso stated.

To curb the threat, the Command has intensified its proactive policing strategies. This includes engagement with hospitality business owners—such as hoteliers, lounge operators, and studio apartment managers—urging them not to allow their facilities to be used for cult-related gatherings.

The police spokesperson emphasized that the safety of all residents remains a top priority. He called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to play a vital role in discouraging youths from cult activities and to partner with law enforcement agencies in addressing the menace.

“It is crucial to engage our youth in conversations about the dangers of cultism and the severe consequences of participating in violent or unlawful gatherings,” he said. He also urged the public to report any suspicious activity or threats to nearby police stations or through dedicated emergency numbers.

To ensure a secure environment during the period, Osifeso revealed that the Command has finalized plans to deploy officers to strategic locations across the state. The measure, he said, is aimed at preventing a breakdown of law and order.

He further reiterated the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace through professional policing, advanced intelligence gathering, and technological tools. Residents were encouraged to use the Oyo State Call Response Center (615) and Police Control Room numbers—08081768614, 09054133071, and 09061299291—to report emergencies or suspicious activity.
