Police arrest two over Ilaje communal violence

By Boye Oyeyemi –
The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two suspects linked to violent clashes in the Eki/Oboto community in the Ilaje Local Government Area, following a lingering land dispute.
Police spokesman DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola said the suspects, identified as Ogunsemore Gbadebo and Michael Ogunsemore, allegedly recruited armed thugs to unleash mayhem after losing a land case at the Court of Appeal, Akure.
“Rather than accept the ruling, the duo allegedly resorted to self-help by recruiting armed thugs to unleash violence in the Eki/Oboto community,” the statement read.
“The orchestrated attack led to the displacement of residents and the burning of huts, palm produce, and other valuable items, while one Jeremiah Okuntimehin was macheted during the unrest.”
The police said both men had been arrested and arraigned in court, while efforts were ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the group.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, warned that the Command would not tolerate any attempt to undermine judicial decisions or disrupt public order.
He urged residents of Aboto and Eki/Oboto to remain calm and assured them of adequate security presence.
“Peace and dialogue remain the most sustainable ways of resolving disputes,” he stressed, cautioning against reprisals or further provocation.
