Police dismiss reports of traditional curfew in Akure

The Ondo State Police Command on Sunday dismissed reports alleging the imposition of a traditional curfew in Akure, the state capital, describing the claim as false and misleading.
Western Post had earlier reported that the Deji of Akure refuted rumours of a curfew and urged residents to go about their daily activities, following the circulation of a viral statement allegedly issued from his palace suggesting that a curfew would be imposed.
The command equally advised residents to disregard the rumor, saying there was no security threat or development warranting panic in any part of the metropolis.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command said the misinformation was capable of creating unnecessary fear and tension among residents.
The police further warned individuals and groups involved in spreading fake news to desist from such acts, stressing that misinformation could undermine public peace and security in the state.
According to the statement, anyone found circulating false information aimed at inciting panic or disrupting public order would be investigated and prosecuted in line with the law.
The command also urged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities without fear of harassment or disturbance.
“The Ondo State Police Command remains committed to maintaining peace, public safety, and the protection of lives and property across the state,” the statement said.
