Police declare lesbian woman wanted amid allegations, family pressure, forced marriage

A Nigerian woman, Foluke Idayat Folorunsho, has reportedly been declared wanted by security operatives following a series of events linked to allegations of workplace misconduct, exposure of her sexual orientation, and subsequent family intervention.
According to information gathered by our correspondents, the situation began after Foluke accused a senior colleague at her workplace in Lagos of sexual harassment. Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that prior to the incident, she had confided in the colleague about her personal history, including her sexual orientation.
However, following the complaint, the colleague allegedly disclosed her sexual orientation within the workplace without her consent. This exposure reportedly subjected her to stigma, hostility, and significant personal risk.
The development is said to have extended beyond her workplace, drawing wider attention to her private life. Sources indicate that this exposure may have attracted the interest of law enforcement authorities, particularly in light of Nigeria’s strict legal framework regulating same-sex relationships.
In Nigeria, same-sex relationships are criminalized under the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, which prohibits same-sex unions, public displays of same-sex relationships, and membership in LGBTQ+ organizations. Under the Act, individuals found guilty of entering into a same-sex union risk up to 14 years’ imprisonment, while participation in or support for such relationships may attract up to 10 years’ imprisonment. In addition, certain provisions of the Criminal Code Act particularly in southern Nigeria, criminalize “carnal knowledge against the order of nature,” carrying penalties that may extend to 14 years’ imprisonment.
Following the exposure, Foluke Idayat Folorunsho was reportedly subjected to intense backlash from her family after they became aware of her sexual orientation. She allegedly faced sustained pressure from relatives, which culminated in her being compelled into a marriage with a man against her will.
Sources indicated that the marriage was arranged in an attempt to control her personal choices and preserve family reputation. Although she reportedly resisted initially, she eventually yielded under mounting pressure.
Background findings further revealed that Foluke had previously experienced a difficult upbringing, including years of alleged abuse while living with extended family members in Port Harcourt, experiences she is said to have described as having long-term psychological and emotional effects.
In the aftermath of the workplace dispute, public exposure, and forced marriage, it was gathered that efforts were made to locate her. Authorities are now reportedly seeking her, although the exact basis of the police interest has not been officially disclosed. Her current whereabouts remain unknown.
Observers note that cases involving personal allegations, societal expectations, and Nigeria’s legal stance on same-sex relationships often result in heightened scrutiny and severe personal consequences for those involved.
