Police foil attempted child marriage in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has prevented a child marriage in Idoani, Ose Local Government Area, following a tip-off from a community leader.

In a statement signed by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of CP Adebowale Lawal, the Command confirmed the rescue.

According to the statement, a 15-year-old girl was about to be married to 52-year-old Asere Sunday, popularly known as “Santo.”

Police swiftly intervened, rescuing the minor and arresting the alleged groom, his son Asere Kehinde, 22, and the victim’s father, Ayoola Sunday. The girl was taken to the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, for medical care.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had offered money to the girl’s father in exchange for arranging the marriage.

The police further disclosed that the father admitted financial hardship influenced his decision, even as local youths had mobilised to stop the marriage before police intervention.

CP Lawal reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for child abuse and gender-based violence.

He urged parents and community leaders to protect children and resist compromising their future because of poverty.
