Police raid sparks mystery in Egbeda as over 20 arrested at late-night gathering

Residents of a usually quiet and orderly neighborhood in Egbeda, Lagos, were jolted into a night of intrigue and uncertainty after a dramatic police operation led to the arrest of more than 20 individuals at a suspected clandestine gathering.
The incident, which unfolded late Friday night, September 1, 2023, at No. 12 Unity Drive, Odukoya Estate, Akowonjo, has since drawn widespread attention and raised questions about the true nature of the assembly.
According to eyewitness accounts, the quiet street had witnessed unusual movements in the days leading up to the raid. Vehicles reportedly arrived at irregular hours, while unfamiliar faces were seen entering and leaving a duplex that would soon become the focus of a law enforcement crackdown.
Acting on what authorities described as a credible tip-off, police officers stormed the premises shortly after 11:30 p.m., swiftly cordoning off the area before gaining entry. Though officials have remained tight-lipped about full details, a police spokesperson disclosed that the gathering appeared “inconsistent with the lawful use of the property.”
During the operation, several items—believed to include electronic devices and other materials—were seized and are currently undergoing forensic examination.
Investigators also revealed that many of those present had travelled from outside Lagos, a development that has intensified suspicions about the purpose and coordination of the meeting. However, authorities have yet to confirm any specific offence, noting that investigations are ongoing.
Among those taken into custody were individuals identified as Osaze Egharevba (host), Efe Osayande, Kelvin Igbinoba, Chinedu Okafor, Musa Lawal, Tunde Ajayi, Ibrahim Sadiq, Friday Omoregie, Solomon Edosa, Uche Nwankwo, Efe Moses, John Okechukwu, Peter Eboigbe, David Oviawe, Godwin Enabulele, Sadiq Bello, Emeka Okorie, Henry Omoruyi, Kingsley Obasuyi, Yakubu Garba, and Ahmed Sule, drawn from various parts of the country.
Police sources further hinted that some individuals linked to the gathering may still be at large, as authorities intensify efforts to unravel the full scope of the incident.
All those arrested are currently being held at Idimu Police Station, where they are undergoing questioning. Emphasizing the importance of due process, police spokesperson Ojo Adegun stated, “The arrests do not imply guilt. Our duty is to investigate credible intelligence and ensure public safety. Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.”
The development has stirred mixed reactions among residents. While some applauded the swift intervention of security operatives, others urged restraint, calling for transparency and fairness to avoid wrongful accusations.
As the investigation deepens, the property remains under close surveillance, with authorities determined to uncover the truth behind what has become one of the area’s most talked-about incidents in recent times.
