Police rescue 10 corps members after Kogi highway abduction

The Kogi State Police Command has rescued 10 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who were abducted along the Aloma-Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.

The command confirmed the rescue in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Saliu Oyiza Afusat, saying the operation was carried out by a joint team of security agencies.

The corps members were among several NYSC participants abducted last Wednesday while returning from the orientation camp in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The police had earlier announced the rescue of 11 abducted victims, including the drivers of the two buses conveying the corps members. It said most of those rescued were identified as NYSC members, although the exact number of people initially abducted remained unclear.

According to the command, the latest rescue brings the number of NYSC members recovered in the joint operation to 10 in addition to those previously rescued.

“The rescue operation was achieved through a coordinated, sustained and intelligence-driven operation by the joint security forces, as part of concerted efforts to secure the safe recovery of the victims, dismantle the criminal elements operating in the area and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.

The command said the operation remained ongoing, with security forces intensifying efforts to locate and safely recover other victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, commended the officers, military, Department of State Services (DSS) and other supporting security personnel for their efforts. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious activities to security agencies.
