Police spokesman DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, in a statement, said the discovery followed a report by a 17-year-old girl, Vivian Peter, from Akwa Ibom State, who was allegedly trafficked to Ore under the guise of a job offer.
According to the statement, the teenager, who is pregnant, told the police she was taken to a supposed clinic that turned out to be a baby factory, where several other girls were being held.
“Acting swiftly on the report, operatives from Ore Division in collaboration with the Gender Unit raided the facility, leading to the rescue of five pregnant girls and a baby boy,” the statement said. One of the victims, who had already delivered, is receiving postnatal care at the General Hospital, Ore.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the prime suspect, identified as Ada Clement, and her accomplices confessed to running the illegal home where babies were sold to buyers for between ₦400,000 and ₦600,000 depending on gender.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, has ordered a discreet investigation and directed detectives to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate.
“CP Lawal reaffirmed the Command’s total commitment to the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, emphasising that the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership will not relent in the fight against human trafficking, baby factories, child exploitation, and gender-based violence in all its forms,” the statement added.
