Policing Bill: Deadline for memos, position papers is Friday — Gbajabiamila

The extended window for the submission of memoranda and position papers on the proposed National Policing Bill will close at 5pm on Friday, August 21, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said.

Gbajabiamila, who chairs the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, disclosed this on Thursday as the group commenced the first drafting sprint for the proposed legislation.

He said the working group remained on course with its seven-week work plan, having moved from its initial organisational phase to substantive policy and legislative work.

“The Working Group remains firmly on track to deliver on the milestones set out in its seven-week workplan,” Gbajabiamila said.

He said the Policy Advisory Committee, chaired by retired Justice Mohammed Abdullahi Liman, had completed the first stage of its oversight mandate and provided the policy direction for the legislative drafting process.

Gbajabiamila added that legal drafters nominated by the Federal Ministry of Justice had commenced work in line with the group’s approved timetable.

He said the national consultation had attracted submissions from institutions, professional bodies, civil society organisations, security stakeholders, experts and members of the public.

According to him, the submissions were being systematically reviewed and analysed to ensure that relevant recommendations were considered as the Bill progresses.

“The extension of the submission deadline, which was granted to provide stakeholders with additional opportunity to contribute to the process, expires at 5:00 p.m. (WAT) on Friday, August 21, 2026,” he said.
