The Catholic Church witnessed a historic moment today as Pope Leo XIV presided over his inauguration Mass at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, calling on the global Church to walk together in unity and love.

According to a post by NTA via its X account on Sunday, the occasion drew over 100,000 pilgrims, world leaders, and representatives from major Christian denominations, as well as delegations from other faiths, including Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

The event also marked the official commencement of Pope Leo XIV’s papal ministry, following his election as the 268th successor of St. Peter.

In his homily, Pope Leo XIV expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received since his election, acknowledging the prayers and encouragement from around the world.

Reflecting on the intense and emotional weeks leading up to his appointment, the pontiff thanked the College of Cardinals for their trust and the faithful for their continued spiritual solidarity.

Among the global dignitaries in attendance was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, who was personally invited by the Pope. The Nigerian leader joined others in offering prayers for the Pope’s ministry and the unity of the global Church.

“Let us walk together along the path of God’s love,” Pope Leo XIV urged, “and remain united as one family.”

He emphasized that love and unity—the same virtues entrusted to Peter by Jesus Christ—must guide the Church’s mission in a world facing numerous spiritual, social, and humanitarian challenges.
