Portable granted N2m bail over assault charges, trial adjourned

Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been granted bail by the Isabo Magistrate Court in Abeokuta following charges of assault and obstruction of government officials.

Portable surrendered to the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) on Wednesday after being declared wanted by the Ogun State Command. He was subsequently transferred to the Ogun State Police Headquarters, Eleweran, and arraigned on Thursday.

He faced a five-count charge, including conspiracy, assault, obstruction, being armed with cutlasses and guns, and conduct likely to cause harm. Portable pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His counsel, Oluwatoyin Ayodele, requested bail, assuring the court that the singer “is now remorseful and has learnt his lessons.”

Magistrate O. L. Oke granted bail in the sum of N2 million with one surety and adjourned the trial until March 5.

Nine of Portable’s aides were also arraigned on similar charges, including felony, assault, obstruction, and conduct likely to breach public peace. The aides were identified as Nurudeen Warris (21), Adetola Alashe (25), Samuel Adeleke (28), Oluwaseun Ayenuwa (19), Oluwapelumi Adeosun (20), Gospel Kanu (20), Precious Ohiegebo (19), Ifeoluwa Babatunde (27), and Fatimo Muhammed (26).

The Ogun State Government condemned Portable’s actions, labeling him a “serial dissident and unrepentant rascal.” The charges stem from a February 5, 2025, incident in which Portable and his associates allegedly attacked three town planners—Abidemi Onabanjo, Ramon Lateef, and Akinpelumi Oyero—while they were performing their official duties at Odogwu Bar, owned by Portable, in the Sango area of Ogun State.
