Presidency fires back at Aregbesola over call for Tinubu to resign

The Presidency has criticised former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, over his call for President Bola Tinubu to resign, describing his public service record as unimpressive.

In a statement on Tuesday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga reacted to Aregbesola’s remarks at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) convention, where he faulted the Tinubu administration’s handling of the economy and security.

Onanuga dismissed the comments, accusing Aregbesola of echoing opposition narratives and failing to reflect on his own time in office.

“My attention has been drawn to Rauf Aregbesola’s attack on the Tinubu administration at today’s illegal elective convention of the ADC—a party of desperados and power mongers who, to date, have not articulated any credible plan for Nigeria,” Onanuga said.

He criticised Aregbesola’s tenure as Osun governor between 2011 and 2018, alleging that it was marked by salary delays and hardship for pensioners.

Onanuga also faulted his performance as minister of interior, linking the period to major jailbreaks and security lapses across correctional facilities.

He said the challenges contributed to the escape of thousands of inmates, worsening security concerns.

The presidential aide, however, defended Tinubu’s policies, citing ongoing reforms and efforts to stabilise the economy and strengthen national security.
