President Tinubu arrives in Brazil for 17th BRICS Summit

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ahead of the 17th BRICS Summit scheduled to take place in the South American nation.

This was contained in a post on X by Olusegun Dada, Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Social Media, on Saturday.

The Nigerian leader is attending the high-level summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Nigeria is participating in the event under the newly designated status of “partner country” — a category that represents an upgrade from its previous designation as a guest country.

This new status, while falling short of full membership, gives Nigeria a more prominent role in the summit’s proceedings and strategic engagements.

BRICS, which currently includes South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia as its African members, continues to expand its outreach to key emerging economies, with Nigeria now recognized as a significant player in the group’s evolving partnerships.
