President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Saint Lucia following a week-long state visit and is en route to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th BRICS Summit.
According to a report by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Saturday, the President was seen off at Hewanorra International Airport by the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, marking the conclusion of what government officials have described as a historic and strategic diplomatic engagement with the Caribbean nation.
During his visit, President Tinubu held high-level discussions with top Saint Lucian leaders, including Governor General Sir Cyril Errol Charles and Prime Minister Pierre.

The meetings focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring collaborative opportunities within the framework of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
As part of his official itinerary, the Nigerian leader addressed a special joint session of the Saint Lucian Senate and House of Assembly at the Sandals Grande venue. In his address, he emphasized the importance of regional partnerships and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with Caribbean nations.
President Tinubu now proceeds to Brazil, where he is expected to join his counterparts from Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa for the 2025 BRICS Summit. The summit, which brings together leaders of the world’s major emerging economies, will convene in Rio de Janeiro to deliberate on critical global economic issues.
The BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has increasingly positioned itself as an alternative platform to traditional Western-led economic frameworks.
Discussions at the 2025 summit are anticipated to center on themes such as economic resilience, infrastructure financing, digital innovation, and the expansion of partnerships with other developing nations.
