President Tinubu mourns demise of Awujale of Ijebuland

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most revered and outstanding traditional rulers.

In a statement issued on Sunday night, Tinubu disclosed that he received the news of the monarch’s death with “double pain,” as it occurred on the same day as the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne at the age of 26 and reigned for over 65 years, died at an undisclosed age. He was widely respected for his legacy of distinguished service to his people and the nation.

“Oba Adetona was a towering natural ruler who served with dignity, class, and an unmistakable sense of duty,” Tinubu said, noting that his reign brought significant progress to Ijebu-Ode and the entire Ijebuland.

Tinubu praised the monarch’s role in promoting national unity, especially in times of crisis, and described him as a voice of reason, a personal confidante, and an honest arbiter.

The President also highlighted Oba Adetona’s contributions to education and governance, particularly his involvement in the development of Olabisi Onabanjo University, where the postgraduate school is named in his honour.

“As the nation mourns his passing, I extend heartfelt condolences to the royal family, Governor Dapo Abiodun, the government and people of Ogun State, and all sons and daughters of Ijebuland,” Tinubu said.

Oba Sikiru Adetona was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs and a central figure in Yoruba traditional leadership. His death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s cultural and political history.
