President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Prince Doyin Okupe, a veteran politician, medical doctor, and strategist who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s political landscape for over three decades.
In a statement released on Thursday, Tinubu extended his condolences to Okupe’s family, friends, and associates, acknowledging his contributions to governance and public affairs.
Okupe, a native of Iperu-Remo in Ogun State, held several high-profile political positions, including Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Special Assistant on Media to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was also actively involved in multiple political parties, including the National Republican Convention (NRC), the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and, most recently, the Labour Party, where he served as the Director-General of the 2023 presidential campaign.
Beyond politics, Okupe made significant contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare sector as the co-founder of the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos and the publisher of Life Mirror, a health-focused newspaper.
President Tinubu described Okupe as a bold and articulate advocate for national development, noting that his passing is a great loss at a time when his experience and insight remained invaluable. He also extended his condolences to the government and people of Ogun State, particularly the Iperu-Remo community, recognizing Okupe’s lasting impact on his home state.
The President prayed for the repose of Okupe’s soul and for comfort for his family and loved ones.
