President Tinubu recalls nervous moments during Super Falcons’ WAFCON triumph

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu says he initially avoided watching the Super Falcons’ WAFCON final match against Morocco out of concern for his blood pressure, but was eventually drawn into the tension and excitement of the game.

Speaking on Monday during a reception held in honour of the team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President recounted how he reluctantly joined the viewing after some guests switched on his television.

“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match initially because I didn’t want high blood pressure, but when some people came in and turned on my TV, I started watching,” Tinubu said.

He described his frustration when Nigeria fell behind 2-0, and his renewed hope after the Falcons pulled one goal back. “I was offended, then we scored one, and I became assured. Then we scored three goals,” he said.

Tinubu added that his wife, who was cooking at the time, rushed in from the kitchen to announce Nigeria had won, but he remained cautious until the final whistle.

“When the final whistle was blown, it was a moment of relief for me and all Nigerians,” the President said.

The Super Falcons had completed a dramatic comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final, securing their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
