President Tinubu’s reward for Super Falcons will inspire Nigerian girl-child — NFF boss
President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent honour and reward to the Super Falcons as a powerful motivation for the Nigerian girl-child to strive for greatness through legitimate means.
Gusau was reacting to the reception held on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where President Tinubu rewarded each of the 24 players of the WAFCON-winning team with a national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a three-bedroom apartment, and the sum of $100,000.
The 11-member technical and administrative crew were not left out, as they also received national honours, three-bedroom apartments, and $50,000 each in recognition of their contributions to the team’s historic triumph.
The Super Falcons had returned from Morocco where they lifted the 13th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), securing a record-extending 10th title in the continent’s top women’s football competition.
“I am overjoyed because Mr. President has done what no leader before him has done,” Gusau said. “This is a magnificent day for women’s football and indeed football in general. His action will inspire young girls across the country to seek success through noble paths.”
Gusau added that football continues to be a unifying force for Nigerians across different divides, and the latest presidential gesture will reinforce the belief that greatness can be achieved through sports and other dignified vocations.
Further rewards came from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which gifted each player and member of the coaching staff ₦10 million. The gesture added to the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the team’s achievements.
In addition, six Super Eagles players — William Ekong, Ola Aina, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Leon Balogun, and Joseph Ayodele-Aribo — jointly contributed ₦1 million to each of the 24 Super Falcons players as a mark of solidarity and encouragement.
