Prioritize humanity over power, Senator Alabi urges politicians

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Senator Olu Alabi, has emphasized the importance of maintaining humanity in politics, stating that the quest for power should not devolve into violence, intimidation, or lawlessness.

Alabi condemned recent political violence and intimidation in the state, stressing that political competition must be conducted with decorum and adherence to the rule of law.

He made this statement in a personally signed release following tensions between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP over the takeover of local government secretariats.

He said, “Politics should never erode our collective humanity. The quest for power—whether in seeking or retaining it—should not degenerate into acts of violence, intimidation, or lawlessness. While political competition is natural in any democracy, it must be guided by decorum and adherence to the rule of law.

“No ambition is worth the blood of innocent citizens, and it is unacceptable for any individual or group to attempt to forcefully impose their will through violence.”

The elder statesman emphasized the judiciary’s role as the legitimate arbiter of electoral disputes, urging all parties to seek redress through lawful channels.

“Any grievances must be addressed within the legal framework, and under no circumstances should individuals take the law into their hands. The resort to brute force by political actors seeking to impose their aspirations is highly condemnable and must be rejected by all well-meaning people.”

Alabi stressed that the state’s peace and stability must not be compromised for any political interest, calling on law enforcement agencies to act decisively to prevent further violence and hold those responsible for inciting unrest accountable.

He urged political leaders to rise above party lines and prioritize the greater good, cautioning them to restrain their supporters from engaging in violence that endangers lives and property.

“The people of Osun State deserve a peaceful environment where governance and development can thrive. We must not allow divisive politics to erode the significant progress recorded under the current administration.

“I appeal to all stakeholders—traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community influencers—to join forces in advocating for peace and stability across the state.”

He concluded, “I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to the unity, peace, and progress of Osun State. Let us uphold democratic principles and work together to ensure that our dear state remains a beacon of hope, prosperity, and good governance.”
