Public relations, important tool for shaping global identity — Information Minister
The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has highlighted the transformative power of public relations in amplifying Nigeria’s strengths and shaping its global identity.
Speaking at the World Public Relations Forum in Bali, Indonesia, Minister Idris, represented by the President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr. Ike Neliaku, detailed the country’s innovative approaches to crafting a unified national narrative.
The forum, themed “Purposeful Influence for the Common Good,” brought together leading public relations professionals from around the globe to tackle critical challenges in modern communication.
Minister Idris emphasized Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, entrepreneurial spirit, and resilience as the pillars of its identity. He noted the critical role of public relations in turning these strengths into a cohesive story that resonates both locally and internationally.
“Nigeria’s identity is more than its borders; it lies in the stories we tell, the values we uphold, and the image we project to the world,” he stated. “Public relations provides the tools to amplify our strengths and transform our diversity into unity, resonating internally and globally.”
The Minister commended the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) under Dr. Ike Neliaku’s leadership for its groundbreaking initiatives, including the establishment of the world’s first University of Public Relations. He lauded the NIPR’s efforts in elevating Nigeria’s global image, showcasing its resilience, creativity, and boundless potential.
Minister Idris concluded with a call for collaboration, inviting the global community to join Nigeria’s journey toward unity and innovation.
Prof. Justin Green, President of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communications Management, underscored the importance of ethical communication in combating misinformation and navigating the rapid rise of artificial intelligence.
He also shared insights from the upcoming 2024 PR and Communications Trends Report, emphasizing education as the foundation for advancing the profession.
Boy Kelana Soebroto, President of the Indonesian Public Relations Association (Perhumas), echoed these sentiments, stressing the collective responsibility of PR professionals to maintain transparency and trust in the digital age.
