Redeemer’s University VC warns freshers against social media, substance abuse

The Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, Professor Shadrach Olufemi Akindele, has cautioned the 1,871 matriculating students of the institution against social media distractions, gaming, and online entertainment.

Speaking at the university’s 20th matriculation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic session, Akindele emphasized the need for fresh students to focus on their studies, avoid distractions, and associate with colleagues who will add value to their lives.

The VC, who reiterated the institution’s zero tolerance for drug use, warned them against substance abuse, describing it as a plague.

He said: “I desire that all of you work towards achieving outstanding results in your respective programs. Each of you has the potential for great success, but it all depends on your willpower. You all have equal opportunities—you will be taught by the same lecturers, and each of you has 24 hours in a day.

However, while some will make the best use of their time to study diligently and prepare for examinations and life beyond school, others may engage in what Apostle Paul called ‘vain babbling’—unprofitable activities, excessive playing, and idle chatter.

“Make yourself and your parents proud by graduating with distinction. Focus on the primary purpose that brought you here through commitment and dedication to your studies.

“Avoid substance abuse at all costs. Redeemer’s University has zero tolerance for drugs. Limit social media distractions, gaming, and online entertainment as much as possible. If you can ‘close your Facebook and face your books,’ it will benefit you greatly. The reward for hard work is immense—strive for excellence.”

He assured the students that their time at the university would bring a total transformation, equipping them to make a positive impact on Nigeria and the world.

Providing a breakdown of the new students, Akindele stated: “The number of undergraduate students enrolled across 55 programs is 1,574, while 297 students have been admitted into postgraduate programs, making a total of 1,871 students for this year’s matriculation.”

The matriculation ceremony marked a significant milestone in the university’s history as it celebrated its 20th anniversary.
