Relief in sight for tenants as Oyo Assembly plans law against housing extortion

The Oyo State House of Assembly has announced plans to curb the growing menace of extortion by house agents across the state.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin made the declaration during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Oyo State Agency for Youth Development, chaired by Prince Adebowale Falana.
The meeting held at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Ibadan, brought together representatives from youth organisations and associations across the state. Many attendees voiced concerns about the exploitative practices of house agents, which have made access to housing increasingly difficult.
In response, Ogundoyin said a committee would be established to draft a bill regulating house agents’ activities. “It is time to put an end to these excessive practices.
The legislation will be completed and sent to Governor Seyi Makinde for assent before the end of the first quarter,” he assured.
He added that the bill would safeguard residents, restore order in the housing sector, and demonstrate the Assembly’s commitment to addressing extortion in the state. “This initiative will bring relief to those who have long suffered under unregulated housing practices,” he said.
Ogundoyin also highlighted his role as a voice for young people in governance, calling for investment in modern skill acquisition centres to equip youths with practical and sustainable skills for today’s competitive world.
The Speaker further urged young people to avoid social vices, including cybercrime and ritual practices, warning that such behaviours could damage their future and the reputation of Oyo State.
