Reps: State police bill passes second reading

A bill seeking the creation of state police in Nigeria has passed through the second reading at the House of Representatives.
Sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Okezie Kalu and 17 other lawmakers, the proposed legislation titled, “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to Provide for the Establishment of State Police and Related Matters” is coming on the heels of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s response to the growing security challenges.
The president and the 36 state governors of the Federation met recently and agreed to explore establishing state police to address security problems nationwide.
Some of the state governors and other critical stakeholders have been lending their voices to the call for the creation of state police.
