Residents protest after newly installed transformer stolen in Ado Ekiti

By Boye Oyeyemi –
Residents of Toluwani community along Shepherd Road in Ado Ekiti took to the streets in protest after discovering that their newly installed transformer had been vandalised and essential cables stolen.
The incident, which occurred overnight, caused confusion in the neighbourhood and temporarily disrupted vehicular movement as residents blocked the major access road to express their frustration.
Chairman of the Landlord Association, Mr. Adeyinka Egbeyemi, lamented that the community had endured total darkness for 15 years. He explained, “The transformer that was vandalised was bought through donations from residents of the community.”
Another resident, Mr. Fakiyesi Gbenga, highlighted the financial loss suffered by the community, stating, “Over twenty million naira was contributed to procure the transformer that was vandalised.” He called on the state government to intervene urgently.
Residents expressed deep disappointment that their hopes for restored power were dashed barely weeks after the transformer’s installation.
Chairman of Ado Central LCDA, Mr. Toyin Ojo, visited the community, sympathised with the residents, and assured them that the government would replace the stolen transformer. He also urged the protesters to “remove all planks used to block the road in the interest of peace,” promising swift action.
