Respect Alaafin’s scared role, Oyo cultural group tells Ibadan Mogajis

A prominent Oyo-based socio-cultural group, OYO NI WA TOOTO, has expressed concern over recent statements and publications by some Ibadan Mogajis, which it said appear to challenge the authority and revered status of the Alaafin of Oyo.
In a statement issued by its Secretary, Asiwaju Sarafadeen, the group stressed that while all Yoruba traditional institutions deserve respect, the Alaafin occupies a unique position as a custodian of Yoruba history, culture and socio-political heritage. It noted that the influence of the Alaafin predates colonial rule and continues to serve as a cultural compass for Yoruba people across the world.
The group emphasised that the Alaafin, Oba Owoade, remains a distinguished traditional ruler whose historical role as the leader of the Oyo Empire is widely acknowledged and deeply rooted in Yoruba history.
According to the statement, attempts to undermine the stature of the Alaafin through what it described as misleading historical narratives pose a threat to the dignity of Yoruba heritage and the legacy of Ibadan warriors who historically served under the Alaafin.
“OYO NI WA TOOTO expresses strong indignation at the derogatory tones directed at Iku Baba Yeye by some misguided Mogajis whose actions appear aimed at promoting discord through distorted historical accounts,” the statement said.
The group called on the Ibadan Mogajis to exercise wisdom, maturity and restraint, noting that the evolution of the Ibadan chieftaincy system—from the era of the Baale to the present-day Olubadan—occurred under the influence and blessings of the Alaafin’s court.
It also appealed for unity among Yoruba traditional institutions, warning that any form of disrespect toward the Alaafin is not only an affront to the throne but to the Yoruba nation and its enduring cultural legacy.
“Let our elders speak for peace, unity and the progress of Yorubaland, rather than discord,” the statement added.
