Respect Olubadan institution, Ibadan stakeholders tell Alaafin

Traditional stakeholders in Ibadanland have cautioned the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, over what they described as repeated acts of disrespect toward the Olubadan stool and the Ibadan traditional institution.

The stakeholders—comprising monarchs, Mogajis, Baales, and prominent indigenes of Ibadan—reacted to an incident at the Agodi Government House, Ibadan, where the Alaafin was alleged to have stretched out his hand to greet the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Adewolu Ladoja, while the latter was seated.

In a joint statement signed by the President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, and the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative, Mogaji Dr. Nurudeen Akinade, the gesture was described as an affront to Ibadan’s culture and an embarrassment to its traditional institution.

The statement said the Olubadan’s response to the incident was appropriate and should be regarded as a warning, adding that any recurrence of such conduct would attract a firmer reaction from Ibadan’s traditional authorities.

According to the stakeholders, Ibadan’s Kabiyesis, chiefs, Mogajis, and Baales remain united and prepared to act decisively against any action capable of undermining the dignity and authority of the Olubadan stool. They highlighted Oba Ladoja’s seniority, leadership pedigree, and contributions to Ibadan’s political, social, and economic development, noting that his status commands respect within Oyo State and beyond.

They further recalled that the Olubadan is a former senator and governor, as well as a successful businessman, stressing that his office must be accorded due honour at all times.

The statement emphasised that the people of Ibadan hold their culture and traditions in high esteem and would resist any attempt to ridicule or diminish their heritage.

The stakeholders also called on Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to caution the Alaafin, warning that Ibadanland has never been subordinate to the Alaafin stool and would not tolerate actions perceived as provocative or disrespectful.
