Rivers APC rejects impeachment moves against Fubara, deputy

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has rejected ongoing moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, warning that such action could destabilise the state and damage the image of the party.
The party’s position was made known in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Rivers State APC spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, following recent developments at the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The statement acknowledged the constitutional independence of the legislature and its role in providing checks and balances but said the party was opposed to the use of impeachment as a political tool against the governor and his deputy.
According to the APC, the impeachment threat appeared to be a fallout from unresolved internal crises inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party, which should not be allowed to undermine the APC-led government in the state.
The statement noted that the impeachment move was reportedly linked to budgetary issues, recalling that during the period of emergency rule, a budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by the president in May 2025 and subsequently approved by both chambers of the National Assembly between June and July 2025.
It explained that the approved budget was designed to run for one year until August 2026, adding that the governor was not under any obligation to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with the existing fiscal framework. The APC also cited constitutional provisions that allow governors to spend for up to six months into a new fiscal year.
The party urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly APC lawmakers, to resist what it described as external pressures aimed at destabilising the government.
It stressed that the APC would take all necessary steps to ensure that the APC-led administration in Rivers State was not undermined by internal disagreements.
