Rivers Government reacts to Supreme Court judgment, urges calm

The Rivers State Government has responded to recent media reports regarding the Supreme Court’s judgment on the state’s funds and local government administration, assuring residents that it is carefully assessing the ruling’s implications.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the government stated that it is awaiting a detailed briefing from its legal team before determining its next steps.
“Though we have not yet received the full details of the judgment, we urge the people of Rivers State to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue their legitimate businesses as we seek clarity,” Johnson said.
He emphasized that the core issue of the defection of 27 lawmakers from the Rivers State House of Assembly was not addressed in the Supreme Court ruling, as the matter remains pending at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.
“Since the issue of defection was not before the learned Justices, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still operating as lawmakers in the eyes of the law until the matter comes before the court,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming its commitment to upholding the rule of law, the state government assured residents that all decisions would be taken in the best interest of Rivers State.
