Rivers United to pocket N1.03bn for CAFCL group stage qualification

It is harvest time for Rivers United as the Port Harcourt-based side is set to cart home a mouth-watering financial reward for making it to the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

The Pride of Rivers ended Nigeria’s seven-year wait for a place in the lucrative group stage after eliminating Mozambique’s Black Bulls 3-2 on aggregate.

The Nigerian representatives are set to receive a massive financial reward for this feat, which also leaves the club as the only remaining Nigerian side on the continent, following the elimination of the trio of Kwara United, Abia Warriors, and, lately, Remo Stars.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), every club that reaches the group stage of the Champions League will receive a cash prize of $700,000 — approximately ₦1,034,705,000 (one billion, thirty-four million, seven hundred and five thousand naira).

This financial boost will come as a huge relief to Rivers United, as it will help strengthen the team’s preparations ahead of the group-stage battles and cover key operational costs.

With this achievement, Rivers United continue to fly Nigeria’s flag high on the continent and will now shift focus to making a strong impact in the next phase of the competition.
