Russia vs Nigeria friendly to fetch NFF ₦800 million

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to earn $500,000 (approximately ₦800 million) after agreeing to a high-profile international friendly between the Super Eagles and Russia, scheduled for June 6, 2025, at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Despite Russia’s ongoing suspension from FIFA competitions due to the country’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Nigeria has confirmed its participation in the match, which will be held at the 78,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium—Russia’s most iconic football venue.

The lucrative payment package includes television rights and comes at a crucial time for the NFF, which is facing mounting financial obligations as Nigeria’s national teams participate in multiple international competitions.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has named a strong squad for the match, with Papa Daniel from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) being the only home-based player included.

While the fixture offers a valuable opportunity for the Super Eagles to test their strength on a grand international stage, it also draws diplomatic scrutiny due to Russia’s pariah status in global football.
