Saka Matemilola emerges 14th Olowu of Owu

The Ogun State government will soon announce Dr. Saka Matemilola as the new Olowu of Owu – a first-class King in Abeokuta., according to a reliable source.

According to the source, the state government in the next 24 hours is expected to issue an official statement to that effect.

Oba Adegboyega Dosunmu, had joined his ancestors December 12 after a brief illness, leaving the Olowu of Owu crown vacant.

The Otileta Ruling House of Owu Kingdom, Abeokuta, had nominated seven princes, including Matemilola Adelola and Olatidoye Olaniyi from Ile Soke.

Also, the Archbishop of Methodist Church of Nigeria, Ogun State, Dr Adegbemi Adewale, was a candidate for the Olowu stool.

Apart from Adewale, a PhD holder from Ile Aderinoye, the other candidates are Princes Adelani Oladimeji from Ile Omo’le Efon, Princes Adeyanju Bakinson from Ile Otopo, Simeon Soyele from Ile Lumosa and Adesina Adelani from Ile Soke.

There are currently four first-class Kings in Abeokuta, including Alake of Egbaland, Osile of Oke Ona, Agura of Gbagura  and Olowu of Owu.

1 Alake of Egbaland – the Paramount Ruler. Former Governor, Olusegun Osoba, The Williams etc are many famous indigenes of Abeokuta from this territory. Lighthouse’s Dayo Arowona and Tajudeen Shobayo are both from here.

2. Osile of Okeona. The Tejuoshos come from here – as does, Fola Adeola. SAS, Hajia Sururah Abdul-Majeed and Saheed Sogbade are all from this Kingdom.

3. Agura of Gbagura. MKO Abiola (even in death) remains the most famous personality to have emerged from this Kingdom.

4. Olowu of Owu. Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo is the undoubted no.1 indigene of this territory – as are Abdul-Hakeem Adebeso, Ladi Bakare and Dr AbdulBaith Olaogun
