LASG approves hike in boarding fees of public schools

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a significant increase in the boarding fees for public schools, raising the cost to N100,000 per term. This marks a nearly 300% rise from the previous N35,000 fee, coming at a time when many families are grappling with economic hardship.
The new fee structure is set to take effect in the upcoming 2024/2025 academic session, according to a circular issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
The directive, signed by Olufemi Asaolu, Director of Basic Education Services, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, has been sent to all public boarding school principals in the state.
“I have the directive of the Honourable Commissioner to inform all public boarding house schools in Lagos State that the state government has approved the review of the boarding fee payable in all public boarding house schools in Lagos State,” the circular stated.
It also emphasized that no additional fees beyond the approved N100,000 should be collected, reiterating that the resumption date remains September 15, 2024.
This fee hike comes as parents across the country face rising prices for essential goods, including books and educational materials, ahead of the new school term.
