Sanwo-Olu backs Nigeria’s hosting of 2026 All Africa golf championship
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has pledged his administration’s support for the successful hosting of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), scheduled to hold in Abuja from November 2 to 7.
The biennial continental women’s golf championship will take place at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, bringing together female golfers from 30 African countries to compete for their nations.
Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), led by its patron and Iyalode of Lagos, Chief Bintu-Fatima Tinubu.
The governor commended the association for promoting women’s participation in sports and improving Africa’s global image. He expressed enthusiasm for the championship and assured the delegation of the Lagos State Government’s support.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of integrity, ethical conduct and doing things the right way, urging individuals and organisations to uphold these values. He also encouraged people to pursue new opportunities regardless of age.
Earlier, LGAN President, Dr Lami Ahmed, said the championship had received endorsements from the National Sports Commission, relevant Senate and House of Representatives committees, and other stakeholders.
Ahmed disclosed that the first lady had endorsed the event and agreed to participate in its opening and closing ceremonies. She said Nigeria secured the hosting rights following a successful bid in Morocco.
She described the championship as an opportunity to improve Nigeria’s international image, promote tourism, attract investment and stimulate economic growth. Ahmed added that golf promotes discipline, integrity and leadership among women, while commending efforts to advance women’s empowerment and development.
