Sanwo-Olu commissions housing units in Badagry, names estate after late Sunny Ajose
By Adeola Ogunrinde –
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday inaugurated 420 modern housing units at the Ajara Housing Estate in Badagry, Lagos State. The governor named the newly inaugurated estate after the late former Head of Service, Sunny Akinsanya Ajose, who was also a prominent leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sanwo-Olu disclosed that his administration had delivered 24 housing estates across the state in the past six years. He added that 20 percent of the homes would be reserved for members of the Medical Guild, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (Lagos Chapter), and civil servants.
The Ajara housing scheme, comprising Phases I and II, sits on 18.9 hectares of land. Phase I, commissioned on Wednesday, consists of 35 blocks of 12-unit residential buildings with one-, two-, and three-bedroom semi-furnished apartments. The estate also includes basic facilities such as kitchens, cabinets, and light fixtures.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to reducing the housing deficit, Sanwo-Olu said, “This event marks the opening of the 24th housing estate brought to life by our administration — a major milestone on our path to creating a Greater Lagos.” He also led the groundbreaking ceremony for Phase II of the project.
The governor said the initiative reflects his vision of a Lagos where people live in dignity and contribute meaningfully to the economy. He emphasized that access to basic needs such as food, shelter, healthcare, and education leads to stronger and more prosperous communities.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted his administration’s investments in economic growth, poverty alleviation, healthcare, and security, noting the government’s commitment to fostering resilience through good governance and political stability.
He commended the people of Badagry for their cooperation and support, noting that the area has benefited from infrastructure development, including roads, hospitals, and schools. He added that the Ajara project created over 1,300 direct and indirect jobs during construction and will generate more through estate management.
The Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, described the commissioning as a celebration of progress and a promise for the future. He expressed appreciation to development partners, contractors, and the host community for their support throughout the project.
