Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu officially commissioned the Mushin flyover on Saturday, marking the completion of the last of five overpasses along the Red Line corridor.
The project, executed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), has significantly eased traffic for motorists and commuters traveling on Agege Motor Road from Onipanu, while also addressing the congestion and delays previously caused by the railway level crossing at the Ogunmokun axis.
This flyover has effectively eliminated pedestrian and vehicular interference with the railway, reducing the risk of accidents and collisions between trains and vehicles.
A large and enthusiastic crowd of residents attended the brief ceremony, where the Governor, his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State’s cabinet gathered to inaugurate the project.
Prior to the completion of the Mushin Flyover, the Sanwo-Olu administration had commissioned four other bridges in Yaba, Oyingbo, Ikeja, and Agege to enhance connectivity along the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line, which spans 37 kilometers from Agbado to Oyingbo.
The Governor described the opening of the Mushin Flyover as a fulfillment of his administration’s promise to the residents, emphasizing that the new infrastructure has transformed public transportation in the State.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the flyover will alleviate the congestion that previously plagued the area and will also reduce travel time when accessing Mushin from the Ilupeju axis.
He stated, “The Mushin overpass is strategically important for facilitating movement and connectivity within the Mushin and Onipanu communities, opening new routes to Agege Motor Road, Post Office Road, and the Ogunmokun axis. This infrastructure has not only improved traffic flow but has also brought significant economic value to the area.”
“With this new infrastructure, we have ensured minimal disruption on the Red Line corridor. We have kept our promise to the citizens, making their lives better. The quality of the infrastructure we’ve provided is about enhancing the lives, livelihoods, and overall quality of life for our citizens.”
Sanwo-Olu highlighted that members of the host communities benefitted from the project, noting that engineering students were given internship opportunities to gain hands-on experience during construction.
The Governor also mentioned that the primary school demolished due to the flyover’s construction had been rebuilt in a nearby location. He praised the residents of Mushin and Onipanu for their support during the development process.
He urged residents to take ownership of the infrastructure and protect it from deliberate damage.
LAMATA Managing Director, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, added that the State Government fully compensated the owners of properties affected by the project, which was handled by a local contractor.
