Sanwo-Olu launches commercial operations of Lagos Redline railway

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu officially launched the commercial operations of the Lagos Redline railway on Tuesday with a ceremonial ride from Oyingbo Station to Agbado.
The Redline, a key part of the state’s mass transportation system, is expected to significantly ease the movement of residents across Lagos.
The inaugural journey began at 5:20 PM, with the first stop at Yaba, where the train paused for seven minutes to allow passengers to board and alight. The train continued its journey through Mushin, Oshodi, and Ikeja, reaching Agege and Iju before arriving in Agbado at 6:27 PM.

During the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of maintaining the railway system, urging Lagosians to keep the train safe and clean. “The train is for the people, and they have a responsibility to maintain it,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the job creation potential of the Redline, noting that the railway will provide employment opportunities for thousands of Lagos residents.

“It’s a mass transportation system, and while we aim to keep the train’s interior spacious, there will be jobs for those responsible for its maintenance and cleanliness,” the governor said.
He further announced that additional brand-new coaches for both the Blue and Red lines are expected to arrive next year, which will increase capacity.

The Redline is projected to transport up to 500,000 passengers daily, with fares set at ₦1,500 for the Oyingbo to Agbado route and ₦500 for the shorter Iju to Agege route. Daily operations will run from 6:17 AM to 9:17 PM.
