Sanwo-Olu reaffirms commitment to transform Badagry into global tourism hub

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Badagry into a world-class heritage and tourism destination that preserves Africa’s history while driving economic growth and cultural exchange.

Speaking at the 5th edition of the Door of Return ceremony held on Saturday, in Badagry, the Governor—represented by his Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe—described the event as a vibrant celebration of Africa’s resilience and unity.

Sanwo-Olu said the Door of Return symbolises more than remembrance, noting that while Badagry once represented pain and separation during the transatlantic slave trade, it now stands as “a sacred space of triumph, unity, and renewal.”

“Through this Door of Return, we are not just retracing our steps into history; we are stepping boldly into our destiny,” he said. “We return not as lost children of Africa, but as proud bearers of her greatness—scientists, artists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders shaping the modern world.”

He disclosed that the Lagos State Government is constructing a permanent Door of Return Monument in Badagry and revitalising the Badagry Heritage Corridor to preserve historical landmarks and empower local communities through culture, tourism, and entrepreneurship.

Sanwo-Olu commended Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka for his leadership of the Heritage Journey 2026 project, and international performer Mr. Jeffrey Daniels for showcasing Africa’s enduring creativity. He also lauded the participation of Ambassadors from Cuba and Brazil, describing it as a testament to the shared ancestry and resilience that bind Africa and the diaspora.

The Governor urged Africans across the world to see Lagos as “a vibrant centre of innovation, investment, and inspiration,” stressing that the state continues to build strong ties with the diaspora through creative industries, technology, climate action, and youth empowerment.

He concluded that the Door of Return symbolises Africa’s collective journey from adversity to greatness. “To our brothers and sisters across the oceans, we say, welcome home. Let us rebuild, reinvest, and reimagine Africa together,” he said.
