Sanwo-Olu swears in LG chairmen, urges visible governance, transparency

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday swore in the newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state, following the July 12 council elections.

Speaking at the ceremony in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu described their emergence as a call to service and a responsibility to deliver selfless and accountable leadership at the grassroots.

He reminded the officials that their election victories were not trophies but mandates that come with high expectations from the public, including improved infrastructure, quality education, healthcare services, environmental sanitation, and inclusive governance.

“You are expected to deliver better roads, safer streets, functional healthcare, thriving schools, modern markets, and visible progress in your communities,” the governor said. “Your performances will be judged by the visibility of your actions.”

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that Lagos has long upheld local government autonomy and said the newly elected chairmen now have direct access to their council funds, making them directly accountable to the people.

“This is a new era of fiscal and administrative independence, affirmed by the Supreme Court. There can be no excuses or finger-pointing. The buck stops with you,” he said.

He further charged them to lead with transparency and integrity, warning against treating public office as personal entitlement. “Leadership must never be about personal gain; it must be about public impact,” he added.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won all 57 chairmanship seats in the council polls, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured only one councilorship seat.
