Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will, on Friday, commission the Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru Road, Akiogun Road (Alternative Route to Admiralty Circle Plaza in Lekki), and Abudu Smith Street, all located in the Iru-Victoria Island LCDA of Eti-Osa Local Government Area.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, he noted that the Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe Expressway was concessioned by the state government to Lekki Concession Company (LCC) Ltd., with the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza becoming operational.

Akiogun and Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru Roads were adopted as part of a network of roads to serve as alternative routes for commuters unwilling to pay the toll.

He said: “An outcome of the strategic execution of the Alternative Route to Admiralty Circle Plaza in Lekki is the improvement in vehicular movement and traffic flow, with its attendant positive impact on businesses and living conditions in the area.”

He added, “Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru and Akiogun Road have also been constructed as semi-rigid pavements to increase vehicular capacity and achieve targets such as reducing travel time—saving important man-hours that would have been lost to traffic—boosting interconnectivity, and generally making life more meaningful for commuters by reducing traffic-related stress.”

Omotosho said the delivery of the project has improved road connectivity, enhanced traffic flow, reduced travel time, eliminated perennial flooding issues, and improved intermodal transportation. It has also uniquely enhanced the socioeconomic well-being of the residents.

He further noted, “Abudu Smith Street benefitted from the influx of corporate organizations into Victoria Island, serving as host to an embassy, schools, and offices, which led to an increase in vehicular traffic and axle load.

“The traditional flexible pavement initially provided for the formerly residential area suffered persistent failure due to the increased traffic volume.”

“Given the strategic economic importance of these roads, the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat upgraded them to a standard that will stand the test of time,” Omotosho concluded.
