Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been named the recipient of the 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize by the Millennium Excellence Award USA.

According to a letter from the Board of Directors of the Millennium Excellence Foundation, the award followed a selection process that considered the achievements and developmental progress of Lagos State under Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

The foundation said its board unanimously approved the honour, describing the prize as one of the prestigious recognitions presented under the Millennium Excellence Award USA.

The award is conferred under the royal patronage of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene of Kumasi, who is expected to present the honour alongside Queen Consort Lady Julia at the ceremony.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, August 29, 2026, with the red carpet scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.

Sanwo-Olu is also expected to deliver a keynote address on positioning Lagos as Africa’s largest subnational economy to attract investment from the diaspora, with emphasis on urban infrastructure, finance and investment-ready projects.

He will also participate in government addresses, plenary sessions and roundtable discussions focused on strengthening economic and social ties between Lagos and diaspora communities.

The Millennium Excellence Awards USA recognises individuals of African heritage and global contributors for achievements in business, science, arts, philanthropy and public service, with past laureates including Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan, Mo Ibrahim, Wole Soyinka, Cyril Ramaphosa, Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu and John Dramani Mahama.
