Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday unveiled five newly upgraded roads in Lagos Mainland, Somolu, and Kosofe Local Government areas, urging residents to take good care of the roads to ensure their longevity.
The governor made the announcement at the formal commissioning of the rehabilitation of St. Finbarr’s College Road, Asani, Tijani Ashogbon, Jagunmolu, Shogbamu, and Diya streets.
Earlier, Governor Sanwo-Olu had commissioned Oba Dosumu Street, Oduduwa Way, Oduduwa Crescent, Sobo Arobiodu, and Sasegbon streets, emphasizing that the areas covered by the projects have cultural, educational, and historical significance for Lagos State.
He noted that St. Finbarr’s Road, which was built by the British during the colonial period, served as a route for their administrators and missionaries.
“We have kicked off this year with project commissioning, and this is how we intend to continue throughout the year. Just yesterday, I signed the 2025 Appropriation Bill into law, paving the way for the implementation of a budget now exceeding N3 trillion.
“Lagosians should expect an immediate scaling-up of infrastructure focus, the completion of ongoing projects, and the commencement of new ones. No part of the state will be left out; we will ensure that development is equitably distributed,” he said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also swore in the new chairman and members of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and urged residents to actively participate in the upcoming local government elections.
“You all know that LASIEC is responsible for conducting elections at the local government level. Prepare yourselves, as we have directed them to ensure a free and fair local government election at the grassroots level,” he stated.
On the road construction, Engineer Olufemi Daramola, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Infrastructure, explained that the projects are a critical part of the state’s infrastructure master plan and align with the THEMES agenda, particularly in transportation and traffic management.
“Spanning 4.7 kilometers with an average width of 73 meters, the rehabilitated St. Finbarr’s College Road/Asani/Tijani Ashogbon/Jagunmolu/Shogbamu/Diya Streets is a major arterial road that connects three local government areas and serves as a lifeline to educational institutions, residential communities, and commercial hubs in the area.
“This strategic road is immersed in history and cultural significance, connecting renowned institutions like the University of Lagos, St. Finbarr’s College, and the Federal College of Education, alongside residential neighborhoods, commercial hubs, and the Deeper Life Church headquarters.
“Before rehabilitation, the road was far past its service life, with inadequate drainage and increased traffic, causing significant inconvenience to residents, businesses, and commuters.
“Recognizing its importance, the government embarked on this transformative project to restore functionality, reduce travel time, improve aesthetics, and ensure long-term durability,” he said.
