Saraki criticizes Akpabio over response to sexual harassment allegations

Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for politicizing calls for a transparent investigation into allegations leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Saraki described Akpabio’s claim that the calls were an attempt to remove a Niger Delta leader from office as “cheap politics” and a trivialization of a serious issue.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki emphasized that at no point did he call for Akpabio’s resignation. Instead, he urged the Senate President to ensure a transparent and fair investigation into the allegations to maintain the credibility of the legislative institution.

Saraki stated that his office had taken note of Akpabio’s remarks suggesting that certain individuals from Kwara and Adamawa States wanted him removed because of his regional background. He dismissed the claim as misleading, arguing that it was an attempt to divert attention from the real issue at hand.

He reiterated that his comments were not about taking sides but about upholding institutional integrity. According to him, the Senate must not be perceived as covering up allegations of sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and abuse of office, as such an impression would damage public confidence in the legislature.

Saraki stressed that due process and constitutional guidelines should be followed in handling such allegations. He argued that an open and unbiased investigation is necessary to assure both the Nigerian public and the international community that the Senate is committed to justice.

Dismissing claims that his stance was politically or ethnically motivated, Saraki maintained that his concern was solely for the reputation of the Senate. He emphasized that his position would have been the same regardless of Akpabio’s party affiliation or regional background.

“This is not an issue for Akpabio to exploit ethnic sentiments or political divisions. He should face reality and do what is right,” Saraki said, urging the Senate President to prioritize the integrity of the institution over personal or political considerations.

Saraki concluded by reaffirming his call for a fair and independent probe into the matter. He added that defending the integrity of the legislature is a responsibility that must not be compromised, as institutions must be seen to uphold justice, especially in cases involving gender-based allegations.
