S’Court judgment, milestone for grassroots democracy in Nigeria – Okechukwu

A former Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu has praised the recent Supreme Court judgment as a historic decision that will significantly enhance grassroots democracy in Nigeria.
In a recent statement, Okechukwu described the ruling as “iconic,” emphasizing its potential to liberate local governance from the dominance of “Emperor-Governors.”
He highlighted that this judgment not only restructures the local government system but also mandates the prudent management of the 20.6% Federal Revenue Allocation designated for local government councils. Okechukwu urged all stakeholders to ensure these funds are utilized effectively.
“I commend the Justices of the Supreme Court and President Tinubu for their perseverance in securing autonomy for local government councils. This victory is a testament to their commitment to grassroots democracy,” Okechukwu stated.
Okechukwu applauded the Justices for upholding Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees a democratically elected local government system.
He lamented the past 25 years during which “Emperor-Governors” have allegedly undermined this section through electoral malpractices and mismanagement of local government funds, stifling grassroots development.
According to the former VON boss, this landmark judgment has restructured the local government system under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, marking a significant step towards genuine grassroots democracy.
He also commended Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi for his excellent legal efforts, which he believes signal a renewal of hope in the justice system’s ability to support democratic governance at the local level.
Okechukwu called on Nigerians to vigilantly monitor the federal allocations to local government councils to ensure they are used prudently for the development of rural communities.
