Security operatives quell unrest in Lafiagi after NDLEA office attack

By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin –

A high-powered security delegation on Monday visited Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, following tensions that led to the attack on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) office and an attempt to set the Emir’s palace ablaze.

The unrest was linked to recent security operations targeting drug dealers within the community, which sparked protests that escalated into violence.

The security team comprised the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi; Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, Alhaji Muhyideen Aliu. They were received by Edu Local Government Chairman, Abdullahi Bello, along with other top officials.

Speaking during the visit, Alhaji Aliu explained that the protesters attacked the NDLEA office, burned three vehicles and some motorcycles, freed three arrested suspects, and carted away seized drugs. He added that the mob also attempted to attack the Emir’s palace, blaming the Emir for not preventing NDLEA arrests.

“This is sheer criminality, and we totally condemn it. Thankfully, soldiers and other security forces have restored calm to Lafiagi. We visited the Emir’s palace and urged everyone to maintain peace and order,” Aliu said.

The delegation expressed gratitude to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his swift intervention, which helped stabilize the situation, with more security personnel now deployed to the town.

Aliu assured that no lives were lost during the incident and cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands, urging continued cooperation with law enforcement.
