Senate President Akpabio denies sexual harassment allegations

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed allegations of sexual harassment made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary session, following a one-week recess, Akpabio firmly denied the accusations, stating that he has always upheld respect for women.
“At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria,” he said.
The allegations have sparked debate within the Senate, with lawmakers and the public closely following developments.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, publicly accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and victimization last Friday.
In an interview with ARISE News, she alleged that during a visit to Akpabio’s residence in Akwa Ibom, he made inappropriate advances toward her.
She further claimed that Akpabio obstructed her legislative efforts, particularly motions concerning the Ajaokuta Steel Company, after she rejected his advances.
In response, Akpabio’s wife, Unoma Akpabio, dismissed the allegations, asserting that both families had shared a cordial relationship for years and suggesting that the claims were baseless.
Subsequently, Akpoti-Uduaghan advised Mrs. Akpabio to refrain from involving herself in the matter, emphasizing that the allegations were personal to the Senate President and that he should defend himself.
In a statement on Saturday, Emmanuel Uduaghan said he had initially refrained from commenting on the dispute between his wife and the Senate President but felt compelled to speak due to recent developments.
