Senator Buhari joins Oyo governorship race, seeks transparent APC primaries

The senator representing Oyo North Senatorial District, Buhari Abdulfatai, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while also calling for transparent party primaries.
Abdulfatai made the declaration on Monday during a visit to the Oyo State APC Secretariat alongside a large number of supporters and party loyalists.
Addressing party leaders and members at the secretariat, the senator called for unity within the APC and urged members to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
According to him, continuity in the current administration’s policies is necessary to sustain ongoing economic reforms and strengthen national stability.
The lawmaker also advocated a free, fair and transparent governorship primary election in the state, warning against adopting a consensus arrangement for the emergence of the party’s candidate.
“Any aspirant calling for consensus is not being realistic. The candidate who emerges through a genuine, open process is the one who will have the legitimacy and structure to win the main governorship election,” he said.
Abdulfatai, who has won three consecutive senatorial elections in Oyo North, appealed to party leaders and members to support his aspiration, citing his experience, grassroots connection and record of representation.
He pledged that, if elected governor, his administration would focus on agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, security and job creation, while ensuring inclusive governance across all parts of the state.
