Senator Lawan, former senate president, lauds FG over completion of Potiskum–Jakusko–Gashua Road
Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, former president of the Senate and current representative of Yobe North, has commended the Federal Government of Nigeria for its commitment to infrastructural development in Yobe State and the wider North-East region, following the announcement of a completion date for the Potiskum–Jakusko–Gashua Road.
In a statement on Tuesday, Senator Lawan praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for setting a clear deadline for the project, describing it as “a vital corridor for socio-economic activities in Yobe State” and a significant step by the FG toward improving transportation infrastructure in the region.
The Federal Controller of Works in Yobe State, Engr. Nasir Dauda, recently announced during a national media tour that the road project is scheduled for completion by May 14, 2026. Senator Lawan hailed this as a demonstration of accountability and result-oriented governance, noting the proactive supervision of the Honourable Minister for Works, Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, CON, FNSE.
The senator highlighted that the N75.47 billion project, awarded in 2024 to Messrs JRB Construction Limited for rigid pavement construction, has already seen progress of over 1.5 kilometres, particularly on the critical Channel 49 section, as confirmed by the project manager, Engr. Kabir Fatai.
Senator Lawan emphasised that the Potiskum–Jakusko–Gashua road is more than a transport route; it is a conduit for commerce, agricultural produce, education, and healthcare, as well as a symbol of national integration. He said its timely completion will “revolutionise transportation, enhance security, and unlock the immense economic potential of Yobe State and neighbouring Niger Republic.”
He urged the contractor to maintain high standards and redouble efforts to meet, or surpass, the May 14 deadline, while calling on the Federal Ministry of Works to continue rigorous oversight to ensure value for the substantial investment.
Senator Lawan concluded by expressing gratitude to the Tinubu-led administration and commending Minister Umahi for responding to persistent calls for the road’s completion, noting that the project will stand as a legacy of progressive governance and a milestone achievement for the region.
