Seun Kuti slams Wizkid’s fans over comparison with music legend Fela
By Folashade Olorunfemi –
Seun Kuti, son of late Afrobeat music pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has criticised Wizkid’s fan base, popularly known as Wizkid FC, over comparisons between the Grammy-winning singer and his late father. He described such comparisons as an insult to Fela’s legacy.
Speaking during a recent Instagram livestream, the Afrobeat musician said equating his father with any contemporary artiste showed a lack of understanding of Fela’s impact and contributions to music and activism.
He warned Wizkid FC to desist from dragging Fela’s name into debates involving modern-day artistes, insisting that such narratives were disrespectful and misleading.
In his words, Seun said Wizkid fans should “keep Fela’s name out of their mouths”, adding that attempts to portray Wizkid as a “new Fela” were inappropriate and unfounded.
He argued that the comparison failed because Fela’s influence went beyond music, noting that his father’s legacy was rooted in activism, ideology and cultural revolution.
Seun further blamed what he described as ignorance and lack of respect for the behaviour of some fans, stressing that disrespect rooted in ignorance could not be justified.
Decrying the role of fan bases in fuelling unnecessary rivalry, he said overzealous supporters often escalated conflicts online, sometimes preventing potential collaborations between artistes.
He also suggested that constant comparisons stemmed from dissatisfaction, urging fans to focus on enjoying their favourite artistes’ music without dragging others into the conversation.
