Sex workers in Ekiti declare support for Oyebanji’s re-election bid

By Boye Oyeyemi –
Commercial sex workers in Ekiti State have declared support for Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s second-term bid ahead of the June 20, 2026, governorship election.
The endorsement was announced in Ado-Ekiti by the Chief Executive Officer of Legacy Bar and Plaza, Abiola Mustapha, who said he was speaking on behalf of sex workers operating within the state capital.
Mustapha explained that the decision was taken to enable members of the group to participate actively in the election, adding that arrangements were under way to register them with the Independent National Electoral Commission to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.
He said the group was exercising its constitutional right to back a candidate of its choice, noting that the endorsement followed its assessment of the current administration’s performance.
According to him, improvements in security, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and the economy under Oyebanji’s leadership had created a more conducive environment for their businesses.
During a visit by journalists to the premises, posters bearing the governor’s image were displayed, while some workers said relative peace in the state had encouraged free movement and increased patronage.
Observers say the endorsement mirrors similar support recently expressed by traders and other informal sector groups, who credit the Oyebanji administration with maintaining stability and a favourable business climate in Ekiti.
